The Dead We Knew Multiplayer
THE DEAD WE KNEW multiplayer explained: solo play, 4-player online co-op, the launch server lineup with PvP, and the PvE-only servers coming in an early patch.

Yes — THE DEAD WE KNEW is playable with other people. The official Steam page describes it directly: survive alone or in co-op against zombies, hostile humans and the growing horde, with up to 4-player online co-op promoted across the game's own channels. There is no couch co-op and no split-screen: this is an online, server-based multiplayer game.
The three ways to play
| Mode | How it works | Status at launch |
|---|---|---|
| Solo | The full world, alone — every threat tuned for one survivor | Available at launch |
| Co-op | Up to 4 players online, surviving together on shared servers | Available at launch |
| PvP servers | Other survivors are a threat, not just the zombies | Available at launch |
| PvE-only servers | No player-vs-player damage | Confirmed for an early post-launch patch |
How co-op works
THE DEAD WE KNEW uses a server model in the tradition of open-world survival games like DayZ: you join a server, and your group survives together in a persistent world. The practical pattern that works in this genre — and the one the game's systems are built around — is to split roles early: one player pushes looting, one secures the base, one keeps the food and crafting pipeline moving.
The game's design leans into group tension: the official pitch is that humans can be more dangerous than zombies. On shared servers, that applies to friends and strangers alike.
The server lineup at launch
Launch servers support both cooperative play and PvP — that was confirmed in the official Discord announcements around launch. The sharpest pre-launch community question, in a Steam discussion thread that drew dozens of replies, was literally "only co-op or PvP servers too?" — and the answer landed as: both at launch, with PvE-only following.
If you want to avoid hostile players entirely on day one, your options are solo mode or coordinated play with friends on a low-population server, until the PvE-only patch arrives — see PvE servers for what has been confirmed.
What is not confirmed yet
- Server browser details — how filtering, region selection and character persistence work in the launch build is to be confirmed from live play.
- Cross-platform play — moot for now: the game is PC-only, with no console version announced (Steam, Xbox status, PS5 status).
- Dedicated server tools — whether the community can host its own servers has not been stated. To be confirmed.
