The Dead We Knew Crafting
How crafting works in THE DEAD WE KNEW: looting resources, crafting tools, farming and hunting — the confirmed pipeline for a new survivor, honestly sourced.
Last updated
Crafting in THE DEAD WE KNEW is the engine that turns a scavenged world into a survivable one. The official material lists crafting as a core system alongside building, farming and hunting: you strip resources from abandoned places, process them into tools and supplies, and keep the pipeline running. This page maps the confirmed pipeline — and is honest about which specifics are still unverified at Early Access launch.
The confirmed crafting pipeline
| Stage | What the game confirms | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Gather | Loot abandoned places for resources and supplies | Official Steam page |
| Craft | Turn resources into tools, gear and building materials | Official Steam page |
| Produce | Farming crops and hunting wildlife for food | Official Steam page; press coverage |
| Cook | Preparing meals from what you grow and hunt | Press coverage of gameplay systems |
| Manage | Balance every item against finite carrying and storage | Official Steam page — resource management |
Gathering: quality of loot beats quantity of trips
The world's abandoned places are the only source of raw materials — nobody is manufacturing anything anymore. The efficient pattern that survival loot loops always reward, and that THE DEAD WE KNEW's design supports:
- Loot close, early. Nearby buildings teach the loot logic cheaply — what spawns where, which structures pay.
- Carry with a plan. Resource management is a confirmed core system: every slot spent on random junk is a slot unavailable for the material your next tool needs.
- Watch the sky. The fog and weather system changes how safe any looting run is; poor visibility cuts trips short whether you like it or not.
Crafting priorities for a new survivor
Specific recipes are to be confirmed — the launch build's crafting menus will define them, and Early Access patches will move costs. Until then, the priority order that the game's confirmed systems imply:
- Tools first. Tools multiply every future gather — the earliest crafting investment that pays for itself.
- Shelter materials second. Walls and storage feed directly into the base building layer.
- Food processing third. Cooking what you farm and hunt converts daily survival panic into routine.
- Everything else after the loop is stable.
Farming and hunting: renewable supplies
Scavenging is finite; farming and hunting are not. The official coverage confirms growing crops and hunting wildlife as food systems, with preparing meals on top — the difference between eating what you find and eating what you produce is the difference between a camp and a home. Expect the renewable food chain to matter more the longer your run lasts.
What we will not tell you (yet)
No recipe lists, no crafting costs, no tool damage values — none of that is confirmed by any official source, and Early Access balance changes make any snapshot stale fast. When the community verifies stable numbers post-launch, they land here with dates. Anything unverified stays marked to be confirmed.
